Every year, thousands of colleges hold the same boring, assembly-hall traditions whereby esteemed individuals ramble on about topics that encourage day-dreaming like few other moments in life.
Thankfully, there is the occasional orator who strives to change all that and Georgia IT Sophomore, Nicholas Selby, is one such orator.
In his Freshman Convocation address, Selby blasted the 2001: A Space Odyssey theme for his background music. He began with a quote from Sir Isaac Newton, exclaiming “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
But Selby was merely using Newton’s quote to illustrate that students at Georgia Tech should demand even more, as he referenced the quote again later in his speech.
“If you wanna’ change the world, you’re at Georgia Tech. You can do that! You wanna’ build the Iron Man suit? You’re at Georgia Tech!”
“Our mission as students is not to follow in the footsteps of the astronauts, Nobel Prize laureates, and presidents who graduated before us, but to exceed their footsteps.”
He then one-upped Newton’s quote by demanding that students, “crush the shoulders of the giants upon whom we stand!”
No doubt, Selby will be somewhat of a celebrity on campus for his remaining years. Hopefully, he has motivated a few young men and women to change the world. More likely though, he’ll amass a few million hits on YouTube and graduate with a Communications degree that he can’t use anywhere.
College life.. go figure.
